I field a lot of phone calls on these guys. Many of you want to know
if they are as good as you've heard...the answer is a resounding
'YES' !! The Large Black Hog is quite possibly the perfect pasture
animal. Designed by God to graze and to grow. Our black hogs don't
challenge the fence, and we haven't had issue with them
destructively rooting up the grass. They have never shown any
aggression towards any human here on the farm (although
occassionally OB, our boar, will get a little iffy with the aussies
if they get overzealous in their need to herd him), and they are
hands down the best tasting pork I have ever tasted for chops and
roasts. The bacon is excellent too, but the Tamworth bacon is a bit
leaner...so it kind of depends what your personal preferences are.
Some of the countries top chefs and food connisseurs are seeking out
the pork from the Large Blacks because of its unique and exceptional
qualities

I find it relaxing just to go out with my cup of tea, as it start to
cool down in the evening, and sit on the porch and just watch them
graze. They are majestic peaceful creatures, and truly beautiful
inside and out. Large Blacks are currently recognized by the ALBC as
being critically endangered, with under 300 registered breeding sows
in the country. What a shame it would be, to allow such a treasure
to further diminish.
We currently have 6 Mathildas and our main boar is Noble Sam. We also
have 'Coal', who is just under a year old and doing a wonderful job.
He is a Majestic boar. We have added 5 Charlotte gilts, and for spring and
early summer 2010 we will have at least 13 litters out of Prudence, Charlotte,
and Mathilda sow lines and out of Noble Sam and Majestic boar lines.
We have also acquired 6 straws of Defender semen we will be making use of.
We are keeping a waiting list. Price for Large Black weanlings
is $350 (with the exception of the Defender stock which will be $500 ea.),
with a $100 deposit required per piglet to reserve your stock and be
put on the list. Deposits are not refundable unless we are unable to fill your order. Please contact us with any questions you might
have.
Typically we do not sell 'feeder' pigs. Because both the Large Black
and Tamworth pigs glean so much of their needs from pasture, it
costs me very little to get them from weanling to market weight,
other than time. Please check the 'pork and poultry' page for
information on pork pricing and availability. |
